Frequently Asked Questions

Introduction

Greetings. This is a guide to the most frequently asked questions of the world famous game series of the Legend of Zelda. Instead of a game FAQ, its a long list of various information about Hyrule. I hope you enjoy it. If you think of anything else that should be here or an addition to a current question, e-mail me! And again this was borrowed from the stupendous Zelda Headquarters.

A Note to the Fans

Everybody listen up! There are three Links and three Zeldas. Link I will be in Zelda 64. Link II is in A Link to the Past and Links Awakening. Link III is in Legend of Zelda and Adventure of Link.

There are five pieces of information that support this theory. Here they are:

  1. Nintendo Power Volume 32, Page 83: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Preview says "Predecessors of Link and Zelda must battle a mysterious wizard, and the evil forces behind him..."
  2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Players Guide, page 4: "Although The Legend of Zelda appeared first in the series of Zelda adventures, it actually takes place many years after the third game"
  3. And on page 12: "Back in the mists of time, before the era of The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link..." Link CANNOT be a young man and ages later be still young.
  4. The Back of the Link to the Past Box.
  5. The preview of Zelda 64 on Nintendos Homepage says that Link first meets Zelda. In A Link to the Past, Link also first meets Zelda. So how could he meet Zelda for the first time TWICE?

How to use this FAQ

This FAQ includes the names "Link I", "Link II", "Link III", "Zelda I", "Zelda II" and "Zelda III".  Link and Zelda I (The First) are the Link and Zelda in Zelda 64. Link and Zelda II (The Second) are the Link and Zelda in "A Link to the Past" and "Links Awakening". Link and Zelda III (The Third) are the Link and Zelda in "The Legend of Zelda", "Adventure of Link", The Zelda Comics, and The Zelda Cartoons. This is further explained in Question one. Also, I use these abbreviations:

LoZ - The Legend of Zelda
AoL - The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
LttP - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
LA - The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
Z64 - The Legend of Zelda 64

Questions

1: Why doesnt Link know Zelda in LttP?

Because it isnt the same old Link! There are in fact three Links. The Link and Zelda in LoZ and AoL are ANCESTORS, that is relatives that came after, the Link and Zelda in LttP and LA. However, the Link and Zelda in Z64 are even earlier! This is how you break it down:

Link I and Zelda I (Z64)
Link II and Zelda II (LttP and LA)
Link III and Zelda III (LoZ and AoL)

2: So whats the differences between the three Links? They cant be exactly the same!

Link I (Z64) has redish hair, brown eyes, and doesnt wear any pants under his "skirt".

Link II (LttP and LA) has blonde hair, blue eyes, and also doesnt wear pants.

Link III (LoZ and AoL) has brown hair, an unknown eye color (In the Comic Series, they are sometimes red or brown, and in the Cartoon and LoZ book they are brown) He does wear pants, however.

3: All right, are the Links right handed or left?

They are all left handed, according to the games and instruction booklets. However, some of the Valiant comics (see question 6) and the first Zelda 64 demo showed Link right handed. I may also add that in LttP, AoL, and LA, if you face East, Link switches his shield and sword to the opposite hands. This was done so they did not have to change the sprites of facing east and could just flip Link looking west.

4: How old are the three Links?

Only one age is given.  AoL took place just before Link III turned sixteen.

5: Where did Link III come from?

According to the Valiant comics, (see question 7) Link came from the kingdom of Calatia, east of Hyrule. His parents names were Arn and Medila.

6: How come none of the Links/Zeldas are related? I mean, didnt Link ? and Zelda ? get married?

The first Zelda was put under a sleeping spell and was not awaken until AoL. The second Link settled in Calatia, not Hyrule, for some unknown reason. The third Link and Zelda finally defeated Ganon without being seperated. Maybe they got married. However, maybe the Prince of Darkness chanted a spell on the family of Heroes, saying that "the one who striked me down will never marry the one he loves".

7: In what other media has the Legend of Zelda appeared?

Valiant Comics produced about five comic books of Zelda Comics in Spring/Summer 1990. Each book had two stories, composing of ten pages each, and three pages of two or one page stories. Another Valiant comic book, The Nintendo Comic System, had a ten page Zelda story in each. An unknown number were made. They are not available anywhere as far as I know.

DIC Enterprises produced thirteen episodes of a Zelda cartoon show, which aired Fridays in the 1989 - 1990 season. I know a few were produced on tape, but as far as I know, not the entire series. I know not where they can be bought, but they are being documented at the Zelda Headquarters.

Link also appeared in four episodes of the Captain N: The Game Master Cartoon.

Nintendo Power ran a Zelda comic strip loosely based on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, in Volumes 32-44. The comic differed greatly from the game. It is now sold in graphic novel format in the magazines Back Issue/Players Guide order form.

8: What Zelda games were made for Philips CD-I?

Philips CD-I had three Zelda games for its system. They were Link: The Faces of Evil, Zelda: The Wand of Gamallon, and Zeldas Adventure. At current, Nintendo has no plans of releasing them on SNES or Nintendo 64. I do not hope that these games are being released on a N64 game a little after Z64 comes out. I have not played them, but reviews are at the Zelda Headquarters. From what I hear, they are quite bad, and I dont want them ruining the Legend.

9: Was the wizard who chanted the sleeping spell on Zelda? Agahnim?

No one knows for sure. Nobody knows which Zelda it is, either, but we believe it was the first. He has the same skin color and looks, but the picture in the AoL instruction booklet shows him as the shadow of the Prince. Another possibility is Carock, the wizard in the Maze Palace. It seems only the creator of Zelda knows. Maybe itll be in Zelda 64!

10: Who is that little dwarf guarding the Triforce of Courage in AoL?

I dont know for sure.  I once thought it was Sahasrahla, however, it might just be the guardian.

11: What did the letter to the Little Old Lady in LoZ say?

Nintendo says:

You asked what the "letter to the old lady" in The Legend of Zelda said. It said "please sell my friends some medicine....or else!"

I guess this is the closest answer we have to answering this question.

12: What did Bagus note in AoL say?

Again, Nintendo says:

The letter Bagu writes to you is a sign that will tell the riverman to let you pass. What did it say? Hyrule legends say it said something like "Let my friend cross the river... or face the consequences!"

Sound familiar?

13: What happened to Link IIs Mom and Pop?

The game doesnt say much. The Nintendo Power comic says they were sent to the Dark World because they were descendants of the knights of Hyrule, but since the Dark World residences were freed, wouldnt they? In the comic nor the game they arent. The comic was possibly a manifestation of an earlier idea. I believe they died of something, and thats why Links Uncle takes care of him.
